Day 9: Final day! Back home after 5,682 miles

It was a lazy start to the final day’s drive. I only had a little over 300 miles to go to get back. When I woke up, it was dreary and rainy. I made some in-room coffee and eventually made it down to the breakfast. I had some food, showered, and gradually woke up. By the time I was ready to head out, the sun was bright and shining and the temperature had risen quite rapidly to over 70. It looked like a great day for driving!

After checking out for the final time on this vacation, I pulled away from the hotel and got back on the highway. The plan was to get to Charleston, head to Morgantown, and then switch to I-68 and take that east all the way back to I-70. Yes, the same I-70 I drove to its western terminus in the Rocky Mountains a few days ago.

One thing was for sure, there was a lot more traffic on this day’s drive than any before it. I know Sundays are big return home travel days, so maybe that was it. Once I got into Maryland, the idiot drivers came out and I realized, once again, Maryland has some of the worst drivers in the country. I did not miss that!

After about 5.5 hours, I made it home! I was excited to see Nancy and Blizzard and it was just nice and relaxing to be home. The trip was good and I had a good time. That being said, driving 10+ hours every day for over a week is extremely exhausting.

Now that I’m home I have a few things to do. Obviously I have things at home to take care of, and my car is a mess. I detailed it a couple of days before I left and now it looks like it hasn’t been washed in years. Also, tomorrow is the new clutch and downpipe install, and GTI 2.0 will be born. I am impressed with the car’s comfort over really long drives and it gets great fuel economy.

Lastly, I am downloading the pictures from my DSLR. I will have to sort through them and decide which to upload. I will work on setting up an image gallery soon.

Anyway, that’s it for this road trip! If you are contemplating a cross country road trip, my only advice is to get out and do it. It’s a great experience for learning about yourself, seeing new things, and getting out of your comfort zone. It certainly will not be the last epic trip of my life. Be it a future road trip, or even something more exciting as going cross country in a private plane, I know my passion to explore and seek out adventure will never die.
