Day 7: The great drive back, through South Dakota and Iowa

Yesterday was an all driving day, with nothing really scenic about it except for the quickly receding views of the Rocky Mountains in my rear view mirror.

Once I got out of the hotel yesterday, I just kept driving until I needed gas. I then gassed up, got some provisions, and continued on. I drove and drove, and drove some more. Eventually I made it to I-29 Interchange in Sioux Falls. I decided to take 29 through Iowa instead of 90 across to Chicago. Pretty much once I get to Kansas City, I will be going back the way I came. I decided to go back to same way (from Kansas City) because I really liked the drive, and it had no tolls. Besides I have driven through PA plenty of times, I would rather drive through KY and WV.

Anyway, eventually I got tired and I made it to a place called Council Bluffs, Iowa. I had never heard of the place until yesterday, but it was hopping. Apparently there’s a bunch of Casinos and the place was rather busy. I guess it was a Friday night after all. All the hotels were extremely expensive and/or booked. A crappy Super 8 was $120! I decided to continue on.

About an hour later, it started raining and I was realizing there’s nothing out here. Eventually I found an exit with… A Super 8 motel. Ugh. I stopped out of necessity not desire and got a room. At least here it was only $54. It’s crappy, but I slept. I don’t think I have bed bugs or any diseases, but I did get enough sleep to continue on this journey today. Unfortunately, it looks to be raining outside. Hopefully I don’t end up driving in the rain all day today.

There aren’t any fancy pics on this phase of the journey. Just driving home. I don’t think I will make it all the way today. I’m still fairly far out, at least 17 hour of driving, which I don’t think I can muster. So, I should be home tomorrow.
